THE country’s main coalition partners, the All Basotho Convention (ABC) and the Democratic Congress (DC) are said to be at each other’s throats again. This time over the recruitment of trainee police officers.
Authoritative DC sources, who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to address the media on party issues, this week told this publication that their party was angered by its coalition partner’s decision to sideline its supporters in the recruitment of trainee police officers.
The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) falls under the ABC-controlled Ministry of Police and Public Safety, which is headed by the ABC’s legislator for Thaba-Tseka, ‘Mamoipone Senauoane. It recently recruited 200 trainee police officers who began training at the Police Training Centre (PTC) a fortnight ago.

POLICE Commissioner, Holomo Molibeli, has banned his subordinates from accepting gifts and donations from individuals and organisations without his express approval.
The ban comes hot on the heels of a donation to a police station by a politician, a development that has prompted fears that the police might be compromised by the donors ahead of next year’s crunch general elections.
In a 26 February 2021 memo to his subordinates, Commissioner Molibeli states that, “it has come to the notice of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) management that there are some people, either as individuals or organisations, who donate goods to the LMPS police stations or police posts to enable effective and efficient daily operations of such police stations or police posts.
Reforms by September: NRA

THE much-delayed multi-sector reforms will be completed by September 2021, NRA deputy chairperson Liteboho Kompi has said.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) had given Lesotho a new deadline of Jun 2021 by when to have completed the constitutional, security sector, media, governance and judicial reforms recommended by the regional body way back in 2016.
However, Ms Kompi said the country was behind schedule mainly due to the lockdown which had restricted intra and inter-district travel as well as large gatherings as part of efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
She said they were now looking to have implemented the reforms by September 2021.
